LiDAR Scanning Patent

Locometric is delighted to have been awarded a wide-ranging patent for LiDAR scanning of doors and windows.

Rather than a conventional Machine Learning image recognition of doors and windows, we decided to go one step further with RoomScan LiDAR. It uses the LiDAR scanner to recognise not just that there’s a door or window, but to accurately measure the size and position of its aperture.

This method is much faster and more reliable than image recognition, and allows for doors and windows to be instantly and automatically registered into a structured BIM model of the building.

It’s a simple idea that works incredibly well in practice and we’re delighted that our application for a patent has been allowed by the United States Patent & Trademark Office (application 17/371,324). It’s the second patent granted regarding the operation of RoomScan, the first being US patent 8,868,375 on the Autocorrect feature in 2014.
